The Macquarie Bank began operations in 1970 in Sydney. The bank assumed its name from Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the man responsible for the transformation of the early settlement in Australia from a penal colony into an active economy.

In 1985, Macquarie Bank set up a retail branch in Sydney and a trading bank branch in Melbourne.
